Tips for Making Decision-Making a Successful Part of Your Parent’s Day

Encouraging your parent to make decisions on a regular basis is a valuable part of supporting their independence, showing them love and respect, stimulating their mind, and boosting their mental and emotional health and well-being.

By helping them to remain an active participant in their daily life, you help your parent to continue to find meaning and fulfillment in this chapter of their life, even if they are struggling with cognitive functioning decline or memory loss.

As with anything in your caregiver journey, however, it is extremely important that you approach this element of your care carefully to ensure that it is beneficial and does not lead to unintended negative consequences.

Use these tips to make decision-making a successful part of your parent’s day:

Know which decisions to make yourself. Your parent may not be able to be responsible for every decision in their life. Evaluate what needs to be done in the day and know when you are the one that needs to make the decisions, such as when to leave for a doctor’s appointment, if they bathe, or if they take their medications.

-Time decisions carefully. Making even simple decisions can be challenging for an elderly adult who is struggling with cognitive functioning issues. This means that they might feel overwhelmed, stressed, or frustrated when presented with a decision to make. If your parent is tired or upset, it is not a good time for them to make a decision.

-Minimize the options. Everyone knows what it feels like to be overwhelmed with the number of options available to them when making some decisions. This is amplified for many elderly adults. They can become easily frustrated or upset and not know what decision to make. Minimize the options for them to simplify the decision and reduce the risk for stress. Two or three options should be the maximum presented, with two often being sufficient.

How can elderly care services help?

Being a family caregiver for an elderly adult can be stressful, but fortunately, elderly care can be there for you. A home care provider can be with your parent on a schedule that is right for them as well as for you to ensure that your senior gets everything that they need to maintain their health, safety, and quality of life both when you are with them and when you are not.

This care can be a tremendous source of stress relief for you. Knowing that your parent is in good hands means that you can step back and focus your energy, attention, time, and resources in the most efficient and meaningful ways. This can be especially beneficial if you are in the sandwich generation caring for your parent and your children, or if you live at a distance from your parent and do not feel you are able to care for them in the way that they need and deserve.
